About July

July, the Seventh Month
(Credit: Farmer's Almanac)

Thursday is the first day of July. Julius Caesar named July after himself when he reworked the old Roman calendar. (Ironically, the change went into effect in 44 B.C., the year Caesar was assassinated.) See the origin of month names.Although Earth is at its farthest point from the Sun this month, the sunshine comes with enough power to make July the warmest month in most of the continent.

July is for sailboats and lemonade, thunderstorms and ripe peaches, haying and fireworks. Traditionalists eat eggs on St. Swithin’s Day (the 15th) and oysters on St. James’s Day (the 26th). The rest of us fire up our grills or head for the clam shack.

Midsummer Day

Today is Midsummer Day or in some circles...St John the Baptist Day!

Here is a blurb from the Farmer's Almanac

"Although Midsummer Day occurs near the beginning of summer, to the farmer it is the midpoint of the growing season, halfway between planting and harvesting, and an occasion for celebration.

The English church considered it a “Quarter Day,” one of the four major divisions of the liturgical year.

After Midsummer Day, the days shorten. In Lithuanian tradition, the dew on Midsummer Day was said to make old people look younger. We say, it's worth a try!"

Through all the long midsummer day,
The meadow-sides are sweet with hay.
–John Townsend Trowbridge (1827–1916)

Back to the Future II: Delorean Paper Craft

Recently on the radio they were talking about things that Back to the Future predicted for the year 2015. I found this article, 11 Predictions that Back to the Future Got Right which details those predictions. Makes you wonder whether the inventors got their ideas from the movie or if it is just coincidence?

Remember Marty McFly's super cool Delorean from Back to the Future Part II? Well if you want your very own look no further.

Click here for the Car and here for the tires and Parts.

Also be sure to watch this Back to the Future II original movie trailer (wish the quality were better, but oh well). Enjoy!

Origami Paper Cranes

The other day I read Yoko's Paper Cranes by Rosemary Wells to my boys. After we read the book my five year old wanted us to try to make an Origami paper crane. We tried our hardest to follow along with the directions in the book, but could only get so far. Yesterday, my son asked if we could try another attempt. So visual Mama went online and we started watching some videos about folding Origami cranes. We made many feeble attempts to follow along but got confused after awhile. Two videos really stuck out for me, and I am feeling confident that we will eventually figure it out.

This video is just kind of fun to watch and is awe inspiring:

I really loved how well this girl explains each step. She is such a great teacher and you can really hear her passion for Origami!

I hope that you all have better luck than we did on our first attempts. If you have any tips to share please pass them along!

Steve Spangler Science Experiments

Earlier tonight I was flipping through the TV when I stopped on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. There was a guy named, Steve Spangler performing science experiments. He seemed to really to enjoy himself, and gave everyday explanations about his experiments. He performed a really neat experiment with nitrogen and blew a trashcan full of ping pong balls into the air. It was pretty cool! I made sure that my kids were in the room so they could watch too.

After watching the show I went online, and discovered that he has a website and blog, Steve Spangler Science Experiments. On his website you can sign up to have his weekly science experiments emailed to you!

Here is a video with lots of snippets of Steve doing various experiments....it's a lot of fun to watch!
