About July
July, the Seventh Month
(Credit: Farmer's Almanac)
Thursday is the first day of July. Julius Caesar named July after himself when he reworked the old Roman calendar. (Ironically, the change went into effect in 44 B.C., the year Caesar was assassinated.) See the origin of month names.Although Earth is at its farthest point from the Sun this month, the sunshine comes with enough power to make July the warmest month in most of the continent.
July is for sailboats and lemonade, thunderstorms and ripe peaches, haying and fireworks. Traditionalists eat eggs on St. Swithin’s Day (the 15th) and oysters on St. James’s Day (the 26th). The rest of us fire up our grills or head for the clam shack.

Midsummer Day
Today is Midsummer Day or in some circles...St John the Baptist Day!
Here is a blurb from the Farmer's Almanac
"Although Midsummer Day occurs near the beginning of summer, to the farmer it is the midpoint of the growing season, halfway between planting and harvesting, and an occasion for celebration.
The English church considered it a “Quarter Day,” one of the four major divisions of the liturgical year.
After Midsummer Day, the days shorten. In Lithuanian tradition, the dew on Midsummer Day was said to make old people look younger. We say, it's worth a try!"
Through all the long midsummer day,
The meadow-sides are sweet with hay.
–John Townsend Trowbridge (1827–1916)

Mother's Day Gifts
If your child would like some ideas for Mother's Day gifts they can make check out The Crafty Crow . They have some cute Mother's Day gift ideas like clay bracelets and hand prints on tote bags.
As I was looking online for other ideas for Mother's Day I came across this video about how to treat your mom on Mother's Day. Maybe your teens might enjoy this somewhat humerous video and learn something in the process!
I also came across this cute paper tulip craft. If your mom, aunt, gradmother, etc is allergic to flowers or just doesn't have a green thumb these can take their place. It is the thought that counts right? You could use some decorative paper and get as creative as you want.
Here is a sweet song for Mother's Day.

President's Day
What to do for President's Day with your little ones? Color of course!
Washington & Lincoln Color page
Since Washington's Birthday is observed today I also found this outline of his face.
I am going to use it as a pattern and we are going to make silohouettes.
We'll probably also read a book about president's.
